Catamaran sextant course in Tenerife

Sextant course in Tenerife, aboard a catamaran. We will use an exclusive method, in which we will use only one sextant, the Spanish Nautical Almanac and a wristwatch. This means that there will be no calculator, no tablet, no PC, no GPS.

The sextant is an instrument used in navigation to obtain the height of the stars. This tool has absolute reliability when it comes to obtaining the position of the ship and is immune to the breakdown of electronic equipment. It is obligatory for the navigation of Height and Oceanic.

When sailing on the high seas, without sighting the coast, it is necessary to use the Astronomical Navigation to know the position of the boat. The necessary tool for this is the sextant, since it will help us to perform the calculations in the height of the certain stars.

With this course you will be able to improve your resources for navigation, surrounded by an exceptional environment and in a unique environment such as the Canaries.

Plan

Our sextant courses are practiced on board, in real navigation conditions during high altitude and oceanic crossings. It would be pointless to practice with the sextant while the ship is moored or anchored.

The course program is as follows:

- Astronomical Navigation Review.
- Drawing of "celestial and terrestrial spheres".
- Basics of the sextant.
- Different ways to adjust it.
- Taking heights of Sun, Moon, Stars and Planets (Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn).
- Review of the Direct and Inverse Estimate.
- Calculation of the Straight of Height and Azimuth of the ship.

The course will be held on a weekend with the following schedules:

Saturday:
- We left Los Gigantes at 10:00 a.m.
- We do the first half of the course
- We return to base port at 10:00 p.m.
- We had dinner at a restaurant in the port area

Sunday:
- We leave base port at 05:00 a.m.
- We carry out the second half of the course
- We return to base port at 6:00 p.m.
