1.- I have never worked at sea, what are the professional opportunities of this course?

First of all, you should know that whatever trade you want to practice on a boat, the Basic Training course in Maritime Safety is mandatory . That is, whether you are a cook, a fisherman, you are part of the animation team or the cleaning team , it is necessary to have this certificate, since it is aimed at anyone who is going to carry out a professional job on board.

The content of this course will give you the theoretical knowledge necessary to put yourself before the dangers existing in a boat and will give you the
practical instructions to know how to act in situations of risk such as fires, collisions, explosions on board or in which first aid is required.

Obtaining your certificate in the Basic Training in Maritime Safety course will allow you to work as a sailor on cruise ships, yacht clubs, marinas or perform service work on boats that carry out nautical activities such as jet skis.

2.- How long is the course and how long will it take to obtain the certificate?

The duration of the complete course is 70 hours , of which 45 are theory and the remaining 25 hours are taught in a practical way, being generally the last three days of the course.

In total, you will need between ten and twelve days to take the Basic Training course in Maritime Safety, since it will depend on the final organization of each academy, as long as the hours stipulated by the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine (DGMM) are met. ).

It is important to know that you must attend at least 90% of the theoretical classes in order to obtain your certificate, not being able to miss any of the practical hours.

Once the course has been successfully completed, it is usual for your certificate to be issued on the last day so that you can go and process it as soon as possible with the Maritime Captaincy.

3.- What steps must I follow to obtain the approved title?

After having passed the full course and requested your Basic Maritime Safety Training Certificate from the administration of the chosen academy, the next step to follow will be to visit the Social Institute of the Navy (ISM) to obtain the appropriate medical examination. to board.

Once obtained, the last step will be to present your certificate to the nearest Maritime Captaincy office to request the Maritime Registration Book issued by the DGMM, an official identity document by which all your future shipments and landings will be internationally accredited.

4.- Does the Basic Maritime Safety Training course enable me to practice in any country?

Thanks to the internationally recognized agreement that includes the Community Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (known as
its acronym in English as STCW), it is possible to exercise your maritime professional activity in any country of the member states.

5.- And if the title has expired, should I take this course again?

It is important to bear in mind that the Basic Maritime Safety Training certificate is valid for five years, as you must check that it is in force for your embarkation date and that you are not caught in a rush if you have to renew it.

If your certificate is about to expire, you should take the Maritime Safety Basic Training Update course as soon as possible. Don't leave it to the last minute as it could coincide with boarding periods and once the deadline has passed, you would generally have to do the entire course again.

The main advantages of this renewal course is that it is condensed only in the practical part, which is 16 hours in duration generally spread over two days and of course, at a lower price than the full course.

At the moment this option is no longer contemplated that the Maritime Administration imposes the obligation to perform in person the basic training course on Maritime Security. The aim is to acquire practical knowledge that would not otherwise be possible or would not be learned in the same way.
