Astronomical catamaran trip to the Columbretes Islands

Discover everything you need to navigate without GPS while orienting yourself with the stars on this trip to the Columbretes Islands from Valencia.

If you already have sailing experience, are intrigued by how to sail with the stars and have participated in sailing for at least 2 days, this is your chance to discover how the first navigators sailed several centuries ago.

These will be two demanding voyages of about 10-14 hours each and you will have to participate in the rotation of tasks on board and guards.

It doesn't matter what your level or experience in astronomical navigation is because you don't need to be 100% involved in the dynamics of position calculation, but the more you commit yourself, the more you'll learn.

We will sail through the incredible environment of the Columbretes Islands from the port of Valencia, on a journey in which we will learn the concepts and key points when it comes to positioning ourselves on the nautical chart using only a sextant and the calculator.

You don't need to have any nautical qualification, but you do need to at least know the basic nautical language and, above all, to have a lot of desire to learn.

The concepts that we will practice during the astronomical journey are:

Preparing for the trip.

Knowledge of the materials needed for astronomical navigation.

Knowledge and familiarization of the sky and the stars.

Position calculation.

Plan

Thursday: 6:00 p.m., Shipping and stowage. Preparing for the Journey.

Friday (early morning): We set sail for Columbretes Islands and moored ourselves to a buoy to spend the night after sailing and discovering the concepts of astronomical navigation.

Saturday: We visited Columbretes and sailed to put the knowledge we learned into practice. Moor a buoy in the Columbretes Islands for an overnight stay.

Sunday: Early morning departure to Valencia and arrival at 5:00 p.m. approx. Disembarkation.

Other information

All crew members are welcome, even if they do not know the language spoken on board (english and spanish)

Qualified instructors with more than 15 years of experience sailing around Rías Baixas, Mediterranean, UK, Europe, Caribbean doing introductory and improvement courses in sailing and regattas will guide you, providing you with all the tools to learn in an agile and fun way.

Experience in coastal sailing and ocean voyages, prioritizing on-board safety and crew comfort.

Professional experience with a high degree of empathy, adaptability, listening and above all interpersonal skills to make navigation a continuous learning and enjoyment.

We have navigator-instructor Ana Vilches, yacht captain and third place finisher in the astronomical competition “stella oceani” in 2021.

Are there no more stars? 5 seem few!! The workshop has been a real sailing workshop, we have been practicing things all day, except for the time off, but we haven't had time to get bored (if you are going to do the workshop, don't take a book to read because you're not going to touch it)
