Coastal crossing with start in Grao de Castellón and destination in San Carlos de la Rapita with return through the Columbretes archipelago. With a duration of five days, in this navigation we will cover both technical and tourist objectives.

As it is a coastal route, we will have limited evolution by one of the boards, port to the outbound and starboard to the return, and will force us to plan the course correctly with well-defined tack points. We will also take advantage of the abundance of references on the coast so that whoever is trained can navigate with the help of a letter and a time signature and forget about electronics. And, of course, we will not stop insisting on a correct management of sails and wheels.

In this navigation we will visit very remarkable environments such as the mountains and cliffs of Irta, Peñíscola and of course the Ebro delta, our destination and one of the most beautiful places on the Spanish coast, to end up in Columbretes, a privileged enclave in the Western Mediterranean .

Plan
On the first day we will set sail towards the Fountains. We will pass this port and go to the Sierra de Irta to visit its cliffs and return to the port, where we will have dinner and spend the night.

The second day we will go to the port of Vinaroz passing through Peñíscola, spending the night in this port.

We will leave in the morning of the third day to the north to arrive at the Delta at noon and spend the night anchored or moored in the port of San Carlos de la Rapita, according to the weather and the plans of the crew.

On the fourth day we will enjoy the surroundings of the delta to set sail in the afternoon towards the port of Benicarló, where we will moor to visit the town, have dinner and spend the night.

We will set sail on the fifth day to Columbretes on an eminently technical day of sailing, on a 33-mile tour that will take us to our destination before lunch, we will visit the island and sleep there to spend the morning of the sixth day swimming and snorkeling. After lunch we will leave for Oropesa, where we will do our last stage before setting sail on the morning of the seventh day towards Grao, where we will finish our journey.

The boat
Boat that combines comfort with good speed benefits for its length. Like all First, it defends its rating well for its hull design, a good size stick that supports a large sail area compensated by a daggerboard that lowers its draft to 2.35 m, and symmetrical spi. Although it is not comparable to a Swan type racer, its interior comfort makes up for it, offering good habitability. It plays a more than worthy role in regattas and offers good comfort for long stays on vacation.

Meet Luis, the skipper

Yacht captain and PPER with extensive experience in crossings and regattas. I enjoy sailing in almost any situation, relaxed on vacation or competitive of regattas. I do not care about the bad weather or sleep little or anywhere but I detest the problems of coexistence on board.

After a more detailed explanation (perhaps the time we were in the classroom could be reduced and part of the "agenda" to see it directly on the boat) of the documentation that had been sent to us a couple of days before by email (this gave us time to read it and that everything sounded to us), we went to the boat to practice what we had seen theoretically.

Good atmosphere generated by the instructor (Queco), who explained each maneuver to be carried out in a simple and enjoyable way, and why. Very well also with the rest of the participants.

A pity that there was little wind and we were wanting more.

A good experience that I will certainly repeat!
