La Ruta de la Sal
In 1989, the Association of Mediterranean Navigators launched the first sports edition of the La Ruta de Sal regatta, being its route from Barcelona to Ibiza. But it was not until 1991, when the "East" version of this well-known regatta was created, with the departure of the Denia Yacht Club. The latest version to be added to this regatta was the "Oeste", which leaves from Puerto de Andratx, in Mallorca.

We have participated in the Dénia-Ibiza Salt Route Regatta. It was an unforgettable experience! Antonio is a captain who transmits a lot of peace of mind, who has everything under control and who is also very generous with his explanations about navigation maneuvers. The most exciting thing is the boards! I'll repeat! 100%

Spectacular experience. The boat was impeccable, very comfortable and perfectly organized. Both skippers with great experience, really made themselves noticed on the sea boards in this edition of the Salt Route, which has been especially tough. Meals on board worthy of a good restaurant. I hope to repeat soon. Thank you!

This year's exciting experience on the Salt Regatta lasts on the road. Being in the hands of professionals gives a lot of confidence, when there are waves of 4 meters and gusts of 30 knots around the boat, above night. The 50-foot luxury large boat is a major guarantor to enjoy these adventures.

  • The origins of the Salt Route

The origin of the Route de la Sal regatta dates back to the Second Carlist War in 1846, when the Carlist blocked the city of Barcelona and salt reserves were declining. A businessman raised the challenge of bringing salt from the Pitiusas Islands to several shippers, economically rewarding the first to arrive.

But it was not until 1989, when the route was called La Ruta de la Sal - Pepe Ferrás Trophy and began to compete annually. It is a Mediterranean height regatta in which sailing cruisers participate. It is part of the group of sailing competitions with greater participation in the country, being authorized by the autonomous sailing federations of Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community.

The regatta is limited to 175 vessels that obtain their place in strict order of registration. Therefore, if you are interested in participating in the next edition of the Salt Route, find out about the different options proposed by Sailwiz.
  • Original route of the Salt Route

The traditional route of the Ruta de la Sal is leaving from the port of Denia to the port of San Antonio de Portmany, located in Ibiza. Currently, the race has three different itineraries:

▷ From Barcelona to Ibiza: Departure from Port Ginesta and arrival at the San Antonio Abad port of Ibiza, with an approximate distance of 140 MN.
▷ From Denia to Ibiza: Departure from the port of Denia and arrival at the San Antonio Abad port of Ibiza, with an approximate distance of 120 MN.
▷ From Mallorca to Ibiza: Departure from Andratx port and arrival at the San Antonio Abad port of Ibiza, with an approximate distance of 103 MN.
  • When is the Ruta de la Sal regatta held?

The celebration of the Ruta de la Sal coincides each year with the Easter holidays , and lasts for four days. Registration is open a couple of months in advance, so by January you could already sign up for a crew team.
  • Is it necessary to have experience to participate in the Salt Route?

To compete in the Ruta de la Sal it is not necessary to have experience, the only requirement is to want to learn and enjoy the competition, although it is always recommended and very helpful to have nautical knowledge prior to any crossing.

For those experienced amateurs, this regatta is a great opportunity to be part of a team of professional crew members and help the team to be among the winning boats. For those who don't, it will be a very rewarding self-improvement experience that will awaken your adrenaline to continue experimenting in the nautical world.

For years it has been very common to find teams made up of participants who want to live the experience and who join skippered boats that make places available to the public. Sailwiz acts as a platform for all those participating boats that are looking for crew members for their teams, therefore, if you are still interested, contact us and we will solve all your doubts.
  • What is it like to participate in the Salt Route with Sailwiz?

Participating in the Ruta de la Sal with Sailwiz means being part of a crew and experiencing the regatta from the inside , not just traveling by boat to Ibiza. Depending on the activity, you can help with maneuvers, navigation, watches, and crew duties during the crossing.
You don't need to be an experienced sailor: there are skippers who accept inexperienced crew members and will explain how to participate on board. If you already have sailing experience, you can get more involved in the race strategy and maneuvers.

The experiences aren't all the same either. You can find regattas starting from Barcelona or Dénia, Mini Sal versions, departures from Valencia, and options with additional sailing before or after the competition. Some activities include pre-race training to familiarize yourself with the boat and practice maneuvers before the race.

Tell our managers and they will explain everything we offer in much more detail and answer any questions you may have.
  • What does participating in the Salt Route with Sailwiz include?

What's included in the experience depends on the boat and the skipper, so not all trips on the Salt Route offer the same conditions. Before booking, you can compare what each activity includes: professional skipper, onboard accommodation, fuel, mooring fees, insurance, meals, linens, towels, or federation licenses.

For example, some activities include food on board, fuel, moorings, insurance and federation licenses, while in others certain expenses, such as meals or the maintenance of the skipper, are divided among the crew.

Always check the "Included" and "Not Included" sections for each boat before booking, as conditions may vary between skippers. And if you have any questions, ask the skipper.
  • What regatta experience might suit you?

At Sailwiz we advise you to look for the best option among all those we offer:

    If it's your first regatta
Look for a crew that accepts inexperienced participants and indicates that the skipper will teach you the tasks on board.

    If you want to compete
Look for boats specifically prepared for racing and skippers with competitive experience. Some activities even offer pre-race training.

If you want to live a more complete nautical experience
There are options that extend the experience with sailing before or after the regatta, anchorages, or additional days in Ibiza.
