The Sporades are a charming archipelago in the northwestern Aegean Sea, consisting of eleven islands and islets. They consist of four main islands: Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, and Skyros, and several smaller islands and atolls. They are characterized by a lush coastline, with green pine forests bordering the sea, crystal-clear waters, secluded coves, and splendid beaches.
Each island has a unique atmosphere, its own characteristics, and its own charm: they are therefore ideal for a holiday that combines relaxation, pristine nature, and fun. The eastern side of the archipelago has been a National Marine Park for years, an oasis of rare beauty where you can admire the Mediterranean Monk Seal, a delight for nature lovers and photographers.
Skiathos is the westernmost island, and despite being the smallest, it is the busiest and liveliest thanks to its international airport. It covers an area of just 42 square kilometers but boasts over 70 sandy beaches (a rarity in Greece) and coves. Peaceful Skopelos boasts a picture-perfect natural harbor and beautiful pine forests. Further east, Alonissos is home to the National Marine Park, home to the protected Mediterranean monk seal, which is not uncommon to encounter. The island emerges from the sea like a lush green mountain covered with dense pine forests, oak groves, strawberry trees, and fruit trees. It is perhaps the most beautiful island of the Sporades and one of the most beautiful in all of Greece. Further south, Skyros is renowned for its cuisine and traditional woodworking and ceramic craftsmanship. The entire archipelago is dotted with rocks, atolls, and uninhabited islets, which offer shelter for anchorages and for visiting caves and sea stacks. During the summer months, the Sporades islands are generally battered by winds that are present, but not as constant or as strong as in the Cyclades, which are swept by the fearsome Meltemi from July to September, making sailing far too challenging and not very relaxing.
In the Sporades, however, the boat cruise will be smooth. You'll be sailing, but the seas won't be treacherous. You'll travel with the wind, in silence, without haste. These characteristics, combined with the pristine and lush nature, make them ideal for beginners, those who come to relax, and families. A perfect itinerary, still little-traveled by sailing enthusiasts, far from the mass tourism of the larger and more well-known islands.
