How to reach the embarkation point (La Maddalena)
By car
La Maddalena cannot be reached directly by car; the road journey ends at the port of Palau, where ferries depart for the island. From Olbia, the drive to Palau takes about 40-50 minutes (about 40 km) via the main roads of Gallura; from Arzachena, it's about 20-30 minutes; and from Cagliari, the drive takes about 3.5-4 hours. Vehicles are permitted on ferries connecting Palau to the island, with embarkation and disembarkation handled at the Palau port terminal.
By train
The nearest station for reaching Palau is Olbia, which is served by regional trains. The stations in Sassari are also useful, as are connections via the regional network to Olbia for those coming from the south. From Olbia station, continue by road via regional bus, taxi, or rental car to the port of Palau in about 40-50 minutes. From Sassari, the road journey to Palau takes approximately 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the route and available bus or road connections.
✈️ By plane
The closest airport is Olbia Costa Smeralda (OLB), about 40-50 minutes by road from the port of Palau; transfers can be made by taxi, bus, private shuttle, or car rental. Other useful airports for reaching Gallura are Alghero-Fertilia (AHO), with a longer road transfer, and Cagliari-Elmas (CAG), with significantly longer road transfer times. From these airports, you can continue by road to Palau and either pick up your vehicle or leave it before boarding to continue on to the ferry.
⛴️ By ferry/hydrofoil
The mandatory ferry service to La Maddalena departs from the port of Palau and arrives at the port of La Maddalena. Vehicle ferries and passenger hydrofoils are available. The main operator on the route is Delcomar. The crossing lasts approximately 15 to 25 minutes, depending on the type of vessel. Boarding, ticketing, and operational information are available at the Palau port terminal, while disembarkation takes place at the island's main port.
