COURSE OBJECTIVES
The objective of the course is to teach future deep-sea and oceanic sailors, whatever their nautical qualification, to find Earth following a method with the only help of the Sextant, Spanish Nautical Almanac and Wristwatch; without the need to use a calculator, PC, tablet or GPS.
Differentiate the main Constellations and Stars in the Firmament, with the naked eye.
MATERIAL AND METHOD
Students will work in pairs, so that while one takes the Altitude, the other times the time and records the data obtained. For this purpose, two Polar Heights will be taken, one during the Evening Twilight and the other during the Morning Twilight; and two Meridian Altitudes of the Sun, on consecutive days.
Students will come provided with the following material to follow the Course:
- Sextant, at least 1 per couple (Petrel brings his own).
- Spanish Nautical Almanac 2021, at least 1 per couple.
- DIN A4 squared notebook, pencil, pen, eraser and sharpener.
- Bevel or square.
- Drawing compass.
- Wristwatch with second hand.
- Front with red light.
