El Título Profesional de Operador General del Sistema Mundial de Socorro y Seguridad Marítimo (SMSSM/GMDSS) es obligatorio para los Capitanes y Oficiales encargados de la guardia de navegación de buques civiles acogidos al Sistema Mundial de Socorro y Seguridad Marítimo en cualquier zona de navegación, exceptuando a los buques que sólo realicen navegaciones en la zona marítima A1.
La duración del curso es de 120 horas, de las cuales, 50 horas son de contenido teórico y 70 horas de contenido práctico.
