Set sail across the Azores archipelago, navigating from Terceira to sunny Santa Maria. As you journey across the Atlantic, you’ll be treated to incredible ocean vistas and the chance to encounter dolphins, whales, and other fascinating marine life.
For those seeking adventure, August is an ideal month to explore the waters around Santa Maria. The sea is warm, visibility is excellent, and there’s a greater chance of observing pelagic species at the island’s dive sites. Much of the acclaimed documentary “The Island of the Giants”, by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Nuno Sá, was filmed here. A frequent presence on board the Tall Ship during our research voyages, Nuno Sá captures the captivating behavior of whale sharks, blue sharks, and pelagic rays that roam these waters.
The documentary’s stunning visuals were edited by Pepe Brix, a skilled local photographer and editor. When not working on film projects, he dedicates his time to photographing the striking natural and cultural features of Santa Maria.
We’ll spend several days on the island, offering ample time for exploration. Whether you prefer diving with local experts or trekking along scenic paths that highlight Santa Maria’s diverse landscapes, your experience is sure to be memorable.
At the end of our adventure, we’ll sail back to Terceira, carrying with us lasting impressions—from navigating aboard a historic vessel to immersing ourselves in the island’s untouched wildlife and breathtaking beauty.
