SKS trip with 300sm and exam on Tenerife

This two-week SKS training cruise takes us from Santa Cruz de Tenerife around the Canary Islands, with the final exam on January 29th in San Miguel. Together, we'll cover approximately 300 nautical miles on a modern Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 389. Along the way, we'll specifically practice all exam-relevant maneuvers, navigation, seamanship, and theory – a practical training cruise with a clear focus on the SKS exam.

Plan

The daily sailing routine is structured and varied: We sail day and night legs, practice harbor maneuvers, mooring and unmooring under various conditions, sail trim, safety at sea, and navigation with charts and plotters. The trip is aimed at sailors who want to gain the necessary mileage and practical hours for the SKS practical exam. Everyone on board assumes responsibility and is actively involved in the training.

In January, the Canary Islands experience the typical northeast trade winds with reliable winds and temperatures around 18–22 degrees Celsius. Strong jet effects and currents can occur between the islands – ideal conditions for realistic training maneuvers. At the same time, the island harbors, with their mild climate, invite you to relax after training sessions.

Our yacht, the Sun Odyssey 389, offers optimal conditions for the training cruise: three cabins plus a saloon, a bathroom, and modern technology including an autopilot, a chart plotter in the cockpit, and a bow thruster. The sails were renewed in 2024 and ensure sporty and safe maneuvers. For days with light winds, a spinnaker and gennaker are on board. A dinghy with an electric outboard motor and solar panels is also available.

The Sun Odyssey 389 is a modern sailing yacht from Jeanneau with a length of 11.75 m and a beam of 3.76 m. It combines good sailing characteristics with sophisticated comfort below deck and is suitable for both sporty cruising and holiday trips.

The layout includes three double cabins and a bathroom with shower and toilet. The saloon is bright and open, with a U-shaped seating area, navigation table, and a functional galley with a cooler, gas stove, and sink.

Friendly, patient trainers who use their experience and skills to get you to the required exam level. Despite the training, there is still plenty of fun and they take the time to respond to special requests/concerns. I would love to come back here to broaden my maritime horizons.

Very good preparation for the exam and future sailing experiences. You can see that all the trainers are very passionate about what they do.
There are always reports of experiences and additional theoretical background on all exam-relevant topics, so that you feel very well prepared the first time you are alone on the boat.

I just did my SBF inland sailing/motor here.
Great people, pleasant atmosphere. The teachers are easy-going, but still competent and can show you what is important when sailing.
If you don't feel completely confident with certain maneuvers, just ask. There is no rigid curriculum that has to be followed. You can decide for yourself where you need more practice.
As you gain experience, you will spend some time on board with just other students. This helps you to feel responsible for the boat and the maneuvers and to coordinate with the other students. But don't worry, a boat with a teacher is always nearby if something goes wrong or you have any questions.
