Our sailboat regularly sails through the Bay of Biscay, and one of the most charming port towns is La Rochelle, where we can visit its Old Port, the charming streets with centuries of history and, of course, its most famous restaurants to enjoy its wines. and seafood. It is one of the greatest pleasures of the sailor and adventurer.

La Rochelle is a coastal city in southwestern France and is the capital of the Charente-Maritime department. It has been a center for fishing and commerce since the 12th century, a maritime tradition that is reflected in the old port and the huge modern marina of Les Minimes. The old city has half-timbered medieval houses and Renaissance architecture, including alleys covered with 17th century arches

This journey is designed to take at least four days.

Plan
We propose two different travel plans.

The first of them, lasting 4 days, would start on day 1, leaving our base port in Santander early in the morning, to face the 195 nautical miles that crossing the Bay of Biscay take us to La Rochelle. After more than 30 hours, at noon on the second day we would arrive at Port de Minimes. From that moment on, we would have 24 hours to enjoy all the charms of the fishing village. After lunch on the third day, we would go back to Santander, where we would arrive late in the afternoon of the fourth day.

The alternative plan, having an additional day, could be chosen between spending 24 more hours in La Rochelle or, if so decided, sailing to Getxo, spending one night there, and the next day calling at our base port.

The boat
Sailboat cruising, comfortable, elegant, of the year 2007 but completely revised in 2018. I sailed on it from the Baltic Sea to Santander during the month of January and February, and has behaved extraordinarily. It has diesel heating, roller shutters, a large bathtub with bimini and hood.

The boat is fantastic and very well cared for. Nice and competent crew. The road is an incredible challenge to overcome. Only Eolo failed us, he was lazy and surprised us with a Cantabrico in calm chicha like never before. I will have to return to meet him in his natural state and his owner. ;-)
