In 2016, National Geographic Traveler elected the Azores archipelago the most beautiful place in the world and there can be no better way to reach these islands from Lisbon than on board the ship.

Our voyage starts with an inspiring start as we sail along Lisbon’s historic waterfront and under Lisbon's famous 25 de Abril suspension bridge. The following 855 nautical mile blue water crossing is a classic tall ship sailing experience. The usual wind is from the north throughout this voyage so we hope to sail all the way with the wind on our beam just as she was designed to 80 years ago when she sailed to Newfoundland on the cod expeditions.

There´s nothing our crew like more then to share their knowledge of sailing with our guests, and they will encourage you to get actively involved with all aspects of the ship’s life. Volunteers to hoist the gaff tops and trim the sails for best speed are always welcome, and the feeling of helming a 67m sailing ship as she responds to the command of the wheel is something to savor forever.

Knot classes are a great way to learn a new skill whilst sharing sailing stories with shipmates, and if the weather allows there's the opportunity to go up the mast or relax in the bowsprit netting. A drink at sunset on the deck is the perfect way to round off each day.

2023 will mark the 39th anniversary of the ban on whaling in the Azores. Since 1984, whale numbers have grown, and they have returned to their old feeding grounds of the Azores. As we near the islands we might get lucky and catch sight of one of these magnificent creatures. Sperm whales are the resident species, with blue, fin and sei whales, and bottlenose, Atlantic spotted and common dolphins are also common at this time of year.

As you spot for whales at sunset you may find it impossible not to be captivated by the beauty and power of the ocean. As we venture further into the Atlantic Ocean it may seem equally impossible that man could have had an impact on such a remote stretch of water. It is at this point that, thanks to the support of our partners at Waste Free Oceans, we invite our guests to participate in our citizen science project to help assess the purity of the waters in which we sail. At intervals during the voyage, we will trawl a small net to capture what is floating in the ocean; be it plankton, fish or small pieces of ocean litter and microplastics. Many find it shocking to find evidence of mans impact on the environment hundreds of miles offshore, but seeing this has a powerful effect, inspiring us to take action. Your contribution will help raise awareness, and inspire change.

Boasting a history of over five centuries, Ponta Delgada is a multifaceted city where tradition lives hand-in-hand with the present. Be sure to visit the Igreja de São Sebastião, the Igreja de São Pedro and Igreja São José, and the Convent and Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Esperança. To the west lie Lagoa das Sete Cidades, the Azores' most recognized natural monument, named one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.

After this adventurous days, we will finish our voyage on Sao Miguel (Azores)

I am a passionate sailor, and whenever possible spend my weekends in or around the water with my family. In 2017, after 13 years, I stopped working at the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and moved to Portugal to work on the Santa Maria Manuela project to run sailing holidays.

Boat details

Four masted schooner Santa Maria Manuela offers adventure voyages, island hopping, ocean voyages, diving and oceanographic expeditions for individuals of all ages and groups. At 223ft long (63 metres) she is the largest tall ship Classic Sailing offers activity holidays on, but the crew to guest ratio is excellent so you will be well looked after. This historic Portuguese tall ship has excellent facilities on board and plenty of holiday toys like dive ribs, 'stand up paddle boards' and kayaks, but this is also a ship where you can take part in the hands on sailing, join a night watch or climb the rigging.

Santa Maria Manuela was once the flagship of the Portuguese cod fishing fleet. Built in 1937, in the same year as her sister ship Creoula, she was designed to fish the Newfoundland Banks and rich fishing waters of Arctic Greenland. She often carries the small rowing and sailing dories that would have set out from the mother ship to fish for cod, so you can continue her fishing tradition from small boats or from her huge wooden decks.

  • Hello.
I wanted to ask if the activity is just to get to the island and once there everyone makes up their minds to visit it and to return to Lisbon?
    Thank you
    • Good morning,
The voyage from Lisbon to Angra do Heroismo (Terceira) is focused on sailing the ship. we invite you to get involved in all aspects of the ships's life, including trimming the sails, steering the wheel and the navigation. If the weather allows we will offer zodiak trips and you may swim in the open ocean. When we arrive in Angra we will have a celebratory deck BBQ. Your voyage aboard finishes when you disembark, but we encourage you to take time to explore the island. It is very beautiful.
You would be very welcome aboard.
