This journey takes us to some of the best scuba diving spots of Cape Verde's archipelago where the water temperature goes from 21ºC to 26ºC and the visibility is typically between 15 and 30 meters.

The seas around the islands are rich in fish and other marine life including whales, sharks (including tiger, lemon and hammerhead) rays, dolphins, and turtles depending on the season, together with a great diversity of small fish and shells.

Along with sea life, divers can explore wrecks, reefs, caves, massive rock formations, and wall drop-offs with rich tropical underwater flora.

We will keep our itinerary flexible to allow our captain and diving master to take us to the best diving sites depending on the weather conditions.

The south end of Sal Island boasts some of the best diving sites on the archipelago. The promontory of Santa Maria is also close enough to the island to allow for island visits. Santo Antão and São Vicente offer a range of diving options including Le Dromadaire wreck, a French East Indiaman shipwrecked in bad weather in 1762 believed to be carrying a cargo of gold and silver. Tribe house reef is another popular diving site with abundant sea life and corals. The southeastern island of Boa Vista is also rich in sea life and the surrounding depths attract some of the giants of the ocean including whale-sharks and manta rays.

When you're not diving we can arrange transfers to the nearby islands by boat to visit the local markets, beaches, and seafood restaurants. Of particular note is Mindelo known as the musical and cultural capital of Cape Verde. The town overlooks the edge of the Bay of Porto Grande, with its colorful houses, colonial architecture, and narrow streets interspersed with broad avenues.

The boat
Four masted schooner Santa Maria Manuela offers adventure voyages, island hopping, ocean voyages, diving and oceanographic expeditions for individuals of all ages and groups. At 223ft long (63 meters) she is the largest tall ship Classic Sailing offers activity holidays on, but the crew to guest ratio is excellent so you will be well looked after. This historic Portuguese tall ship has excellent facilities on board and plenty of holiday toys like dive ribs, 'stand up paddle boards' and kayaks, but this is also a ship where you can take part in the hands on sailing, join a night watch or climb the rigging.

Santa Maria Manuela was once the flagship of the Portuguese cod fishing fleet. Built in 1937, in the same year as her sister ship Creoula, she was designed to fish the Newfoundland Banks and rich fishing waters of Arctic Greenland. She often carries the small rowing and sailing dories that would have set out from the mother ship to fish for cod, so you can continue her fishing tradition from small boats or from her huge wooden decks.

I am a passionate sailor, and whenever possible spend my weekends in or around the water with my family. In 2017, after 13 years, I stopped working at the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and moved to Portugal to work on the Santa Maria Manuela project to run sailing holidays.

Terrific crew & ship and a lovely passage to the Azores. Crew & Guests very good and patient with someone who only spoke English. It would be difficult to find a better one.
This is a terrifically well run vessel, or was on this trip. Excellent accommodation, well serviced by a professional crew. All very friendly, helpful and willing to give information throughout. Many opportunities to get involved in most aspects of the ships operation & involvement in the vessel's past history.
The Island was beautiful and rather unexpected.
Best wishes & Good Luck for the future.
    Very many thanks
