The title of Restricted Radio Operator is mandatory for the captains and officers in charge of the navigational watch of civilian ships under the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) in Maritime Zone A1.

Plan
The duration of the course is 40 hours, 15 of them corresponding to theoretical content and 25 to practical content. To get the degree you must attend at least 90% of the theoretical hours and 100% of the practices.

The course program consists of the following modules:

MODULE OF THE GENERAL PRINCIPLES AND THE BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MARITIME MOBILE SERVICE
- Types of communications in the maritime mobile service
- Distress, urgency and safety communications, public correspondence
- Communications within port, between ships and on board
- Types of stations in the maritime mobile service
- Elementary knowledge of frequencies and frequency bands, the concept of frequency
- Frequency characteristics, VHF frequency propagation
- Knowledge of the Digital Selective Calling (LSD) and Radiotelephony communication modes
- Use of VHF frequencies in the maritime mobile service
- The concept of the channels; simplex, half-duplex and duplex
- SMSSM distress and safety frequencies

MODULE OF PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE AND ENABLING THE BASIC TEAM OF THE BOAT STATION
- Basic knowledge of station equipment on a ship
- VHF radio installations, channels, controls, use, digital selective calling
- Antennas, VHF antennas, NAVTEX system antennas
- Types of batteries and their characteristics, charging and maintenance of batteries, UPS systems
- Survival craft radio equipment: portable VHF, EPIRB, SART
- Digital Selective Call (DSC - LSD): format, types and categories, MMSI number, channel 70

MODULE OF OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES AND DETAILED OPERATION OF THE PRACTICE OF SMSSM SYSTEMS AND THEIR SUBSYSTEMS
- Global Maritime Relief and Safety System (SMSSM - GMDSS)
- Maritime areas and the main plan of the SMSSM
- Guard in VHF distress frequencies
- Functional requirements of stations on board the ship within zone A1
- Requirements for transporting stations on board ships within zone A1
- Radio station energy sources including emergency sources
- Inspections and revisions of security certificates, and Licenses
- NAVTEX: purpose, frequencies, range, use and configuration
- EPIRB radio beacons: COSPAS-SARSAT system, purpose, frequencies, range, check, use and configuration
- SART Radar Transponder: purpose, frequencies, range, use and configuration
- Relief communications: distress call and alert, reception and acknowledgment, false alerts, cancellation
- Search and Rescue Operations (SAR): IAMSAR manual, Rescue Coordination Centers (CCS)
- Emergency and Security Communications
- Receipt of maritime safety information (ISM)
- Protection of distress frequencies
- Distress, urgency and safety communications for ships not subject to SOLAS

MODULE OF OPERATING CAPABILITIES AND PROCEDURES FOR COMMUNICATIONS
- Ability to use the English language, both written and spoken
- Use of the International Code of Signals and IMO Standardized Phrases
- Knowledge of the standard abbreviations and the most commonly used service codes
- Use of the international phonetic alphabet
- Effective use of mandatory documents and publications
- Maintenance of the radio service newspaper
- Knowledge of the regulations of the maritime mobile service and the mobile-satellite system
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of the general communications procedures
- Traffic rates, international charging system, AAIC code
- Main navigation routes and their annexed routes of ships sailing in Zone A1

    Fantastic experience. Intensive course that allows a total immersion in navigation. Floren is passionate about navigation and transmits it, always resolves any doubts and with his experience in nautical teaching has developed many tips to learn effortlessly. He is also a great guy and makes the activity on board and when arriving at port fun and enjoyable.
