From Spitsbergen to Jan Mayen — and, if conditions allow, even to Greenland… before finishing in Iceland. This is more than a sailing trip; it’s a true Arctic expedition across some of the most remote regions on Earth, offering the chance to reach places few people have ever seen.
Our journey begins in Longyearbyen, the capital of Svalbard. After quick preparations and provisioning, we leave civilization behind and head into the vast Arctic. Here, in a place where polar bears outnumber people, the expedition truly begins.
Our first major objective is Jan Mayen, a remote volcanic island dominated by Beerenberg, Europe’s second-highest active volcano. With no permanent residents and protected by royal decree, landing requires a special permit — one we’ll attempt to obtain. Whether we succeed depends entirely on conditions, which is part of the adventure.
From there, we may attempt to reach the eastern coast of Greenland — one of the most isolated inhabited regions in the world. Access is only possible during a short summer window when the ice retreats, and even then, nothing is guaranteed. If conditions allow, we’ll push forward. If not, we set course for Iceland.
Along the way, we sail among icebergs and navigate through pack ice — not as a rare sight, but as a daily reality. Wildlife encounters are possible, from seabirds and musk oxen to the occasional polar bear. The Arctic is unpredictable: weather can change within minutes, from calm sunshine to sudden snow squalls.
If Greenland grants us passage, the reward is unforgettable. If not, Iceland awaits — and with it the dramatic landscapes of the Westfjords. Here, the pace slows. Quiet bays, rugged coastlines, and simple pleasures like fresh cod caught straight from the sea offer a different kind of experience.
The final stage brings us back to Reykjavik. Spectacular scenery and unique onshore highlights make it worth extending the return journey, allowing time to explore Iceland from land and complete the story of the expedition.
The voyage takes place aboard a fully equipped yacht designed for remote sailing, with insulation, heating systems, and all necessary equipment for Arctic conditions. It also offers an excellent opportunity to build sea miles toward a Yachtmaster Ocean qualification.
The itinerary presents one possible route, but the final course will always be shaped by weather and ice. This flexibility is not a limitation — it is the essence of a true expedition.
This is where our sea adventure comes to an end. After such a journey, the experience of standing on solid ground takes on a whole new meaning.
