The Ophiusa regatta. a deep-sea regatta from Port Olimpic (Barcelona) to Port La Savina (Formentera). Ibiza, port or starboard? A great incentive for regatta tacticians!
Formentera: its name is one of the great mysteries of the island of Formentera. Many historians and linguists have tried to find out the origin of its name, but none of them has found an etymology that would put an end to as many speculations as peoples have arrived on the island.
Ophiusa means "land of snakes" in Greek, since Greek and Roman legends claimed that the island was full of a large and malevolent genus of snakes. The truth is that there have never been snakes on Formentera, although there have been lizards, a reptile that has always been very present.
Other origins indicate it as Frumentaria (from the Latin), or Wheat Island, although there is no documented evidence of this either, since it is an island of poor land for its cultivation.
The one that we like the most is the Promontoria (from the Latin), a word that would be adapted from Latinos and Hispanics when they referred to the capes of Barbería and La Mola due to their height, whose deformation would come from their difficulty in pronouncing a consonant followed by the r In this way, Promontoria would become Formontoria, then Formentera, without a doubt one of the first geological points of the island when arriving from the sea... upon our arrival from the Ophiusa Regatta!
The Ophiusa regatta. It starts with the departure from Port Olimpic (Barcelona) and ends in Port La Savina (Formentera).
As a curiosity, this regatta can be chosen between 2 different defeats, the first in this case is to leave Ibiza on the starboard side passing near the islet of Tagomago and in turn crossing Los Freus that divide Ibiza and Formentera to arrive at the port of the Sabine from Formentera.
The second alternative is to leave Ibiza on the port side passing Es Vedrá, to the south of Ibiza. Both routes have a similar distance around 160 miles. Choosing the appropriate route based on the characteristics of the weather is another incentive for the regatta.
After the arrival of the regatta, one of the most fun and long-awaited moments by the sailors: the delivery of the trophies to the winners of the Ophiusa Regatta! Participate in this unique and extraordinary experience. Do not lose your job!
