Adventure offered by Nigel

5 days
Our sailing adventure begins in a beautiful city in France such as La Rochelle. This town was, back in the 10th century, a fishing village, but its port soon became famous as a commercial center for wine and salt.

Before boarding, we advise you to get to know the city, walking through the Vieux-Port neighborhood, the emblematic part of the city that has inspired painters and photographers throughout history. You will be able to observe the medieval architecture, which includes three historic towers. The best known is the 15th-century Lantern Tower, which boasts spectacular views of the city and the harbour.

As we contemplate all the beauty of La Rochelle, we will join the festival's candle parade, west and north towards the Bay of Biscay. You can volunteer to help the crew raise and lower the sails. The feeling of steering a classic 68m boat is something you will never forget. Additionally, our crew is always happy to share their knowledge of the sea with all guests, and will encourage you to actively participate in everything related to sailing.

Knot training is also a great way to learn this important sailing skill. As you do so, you'll share stories with your shipmates and if the weather allows there's even the chance to go up the mast or relax on the bowsprit. Of course, enjoying a drink at sunset on the deck is the perfect way to round off each day.

After a few days at sea, we'll approach the aptly named British island of Belle-Ile en Mer, where incredibly beautiful landscapes offer a spectacular mosaic of peaceful beaches, spectacular cliffs, colourful ports and lush landscapes. If we're lucky with the weather, we will get here while the sun is still out. For the more adventurous, it's a good opportunity to swim and enjoy the boat's kayaks and paddleboards. For those who prefer something cultural, you can take the zodiac ashore to walk along the docks and see up close the colorful houses, port and streets of the old town of Palais, as well as explore the citadel of Vauban.

Soon we set sail again, this time heading towards our final destination, Lorient, where we'll contemplate another great port party. After disembarking, you can enjoy the festive atmosphere of the city or visit the fish market, which is full of people every morning. The fresh fish and seafood brought in by the boats is transported directly to Melville's indoor market, the heart of the city.

In Belle Ile expect pleasant maximum average daytime temperatures of around 19°C (65°F) and nighttime temperatures around 15°C (59°F)

I am a passionate sailor, and whenever possible spend my weekends in or around the water with my family. In 2017, after 13 years, I stopped working at the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and moved to Portugal to work on the Santa Maria Manuela project to run sailing holidays.

Boat details

Four masted schooner Santa Maria Manuela offers adventure voyages, island hopping, ocean voyages, diving and oceanographic expeditions for individuals of all ages and groups. At 223ft long (63 metres) she is the largest tall ship Classic Sailing offers activity holidays on, but the crew to guest ratio is excellent so you will be well looked after. This historic Portuguese tall ship has excellent facilities on board and plenty of holiday toys like dive ribs, 'stand up paddle boards' and kayaks, but this is also a ship where you can take part in the hands on sailing, join a night watch or climb the rigging.

Santa Maria Manuela was once the flagship of the Portuguese cod fishing fleet. Built in 1937, in the same year as her sister ship Creoula, she was designed to fish the Newfoundland Banks and rich fishing waters of Arctic Greenland. She often carries the small rowing and sailing dories that would have set out from the mother ship to fish for cod, so you can continue her fishing tradition from small boats or from her huge wooden decks.

A great experience. A debt to the crew, who has been kind and very attentive. Captain Joao, a great professional. Hi, it would make sense to navigate both of them. The vaixell, impeccable. The menjar, molt bo. And it feels like it's like a house. Navigation with winds of 45 knots is fair and safe.
