Adventure offered by Nigel

We will begin our trip in Le Havre and sail across the English Channel into Falmouth, before returning south to reach Brest, where one of the world's most important maritime festivals will take place.

A two-day trip will be enough time to learn how to sail the tall ship, where all volunteers are welcome to help the crew in preparing to set sail, as well as to operate the helm. Knot formations are a great way to learn new skills, while sharing stories with other shipmates. If the weather allows, there may also be the option to going up the mast or relaxing on the bowsprit. Having a drink at sunset is a perfect way to round off each day.

We will soon head towards Falmouth, the third largest natural deep water harbor in the world. It's surrounded by an area of spectacular natural beauty, a true magnet for walkers and sailors.

Indeed, the lure of sailing to Falmouth has historically been a source of inspiration for many artists, sailors, explorers, musicians and shipbuilders. From Robin Knox-Johnston to Ellen Macarthur and Henry Moore, many have found sought solace and espace in the inlets and streams of the Fal Estuary and the coves and cliffs of the stunning Cornish coast.  As the most westerly large harbour in Britain, Falmouth has played a huge role in the history of sailing. From the late 17th century and for 150 years, Packet ships left Falmouth carrying mail to the growing empire.

The final destination of our trip will be the Brest Festival, a very important maritime event hosted every four years and attended by more than 2,500 boats from all over the world. Hundreds of thousands of sailors and sea-lovers gather along the banks of the Penfeld and on the docks to admire the festivals flotilla.

Once we have disembarked, we advise you to take a tour of the city of Brest to experience live music shows, urban performances and military parades, to taste the local cuisine and, of course, to enjoy the nautical exhibitions at the festival.

Weather:
June in Falmouth is usually warm, with average temperatures ranging from 18°C (65°F) to 24°C (75°F). A generally pleasant month with longer daylight hours, making it ideal for outdoor activities.

I am a passionate sailor, and whenever possible spend my weekends in or around the water with my family. In 2017, after 13 years, I stopped working at the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and moved to Portugal to work on the Santa Maria Manuela project to run sailing holidays.

Boat details

Four masted schooner Santa Maria Manuela offers adventure voyages, island hopping, ocean voyages, diving and oceanographic expeditions for individuals of all ages and groups. At 223ft long (63 metres) she is the largest tall ship Classic Sailing offers activity holidays on, but the crew to guest ratio is excellent so you will be well looked after. This historic Portuguese tall ship has excellent facilities on board and plenty of holiday toys like dive ribs, 'stand up paddle boards' and kayaks, but this is also a ship where you can take part in the hands on sailing, join a night watch or climb the rigging.

Santa Maria Manuela was once the flagship of the Portuguese cod fishing fleet. Built in 1937, in the same year as her sister ship Creoula, she was designed to fish the Newfoundland Banks and rich fishing waters of Arctic Greenland. She often carries the small rowing and sailing dories that would have set out from the mother ship to fish for cod, so you can continue her fishing tradition from small boats or from her huge wooden decks.

A great experience. A debt to the crew, who has been kind and very attentive. Captain Joao, a great professional. Hi, it would make sense to navigate both of them. The vaixell, impeccable. The menjar, molt bo. And it feels like it's like a house. Navigation with winds of 45 knots is fair and safe.
