Enjoy an open water crossing from Madeira to Tenerife, with a stopover in La Palma island.

On this trip, we will sail from the tropical island of Madeira to the rugged Canary island of Tenerife, with a delightful stop at La Palma, a true treasure of the Canary Islands.

We will sail on this iconic ocean voyage from Madeira’s luxuriant green shores, with its primitive laurel forest, unique water channels, waterfalls and the ever-blooming city of Funchal.

Just a day sailing to the south, we can find Ilhas Selvagens marine park, which, in 2021 celebrated 50 years of protection by extending the zone to become Europe’s largest park. With the weather and the sea in our favor,  we will have the opportunity to use zodiacs and go ashore to spot for the mystical Shearwater, known to nest on the rocky shores of this moon-scaped island.

With a journey of 285 nautical miles of open sea, we invite all participants to get involved in navigation tasks, from controlling the rudder to trimming the sails. When you are not involved in the sailing there’s plenty of time to fish, read, play board games or share sailing stories by the bar.

During this voyage, you may find it impossible not to be impressed by the beauty and power of the ocean. As we venture further into the Atlantic Ocean, it may seem equally impossible that man could have had any negative impact on such a remote location. At this point, and thanks to the support of our partners at Waste Free Oceans, we invite our guests to participate in our citizen science project to analyze the purity of the water where we will be sailing. At different intervals of the voyage, we will trawl a small net to capture what is floating in the ocean. Many people find shocking the evidence of man’s impact on the environment, hundreds of miles away from the coast. Seeing this has a powerful effect, inspiring us to take action, raise awareness and inspire social change.

As we approach La Palma, you’ll be captivated by its green forests, volcanic landscapes, and picturesque villages—a serene escape from the crowds.

We will disembark on our final day in Santa Cruz, Tenerife.

I am a passionate sailor, and whenever possible spend my weekends in or around the water with my family. In 2017, after 13 years, I stopped working at the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and moved to Portugal to work on the Santa Maria Manuela project to run sailing holidays.

This schooner was once the flagship of the Portuguese cod fishing fleet. Built in 1937, in the same year as her sister ship Creoula, she was designed to fish the Newfoundland Banks and rich fishing waters of Arctic Greenland. She often carries the small rowing and sailing dories that would have set out from the mother ship to fish for cod, so you can continue her fishing tradition from small boats or from her huge wooden decks.

A great experience. A debt to the crew, who has been kind and very attentive. Captain Joao, a great professional. Hi, it would make sense to navigate both of them. The vaixell, impeccable. The menjar, molt bo. And it feels like it's like a house. Navigation with winds of 45 knots is fair and safe.
