Adventure offered by Nigel

6 days
SMM
This voyage offers the rare opportunity to sail in convoy with France’s legendary three-masted square-rigger, Le Belem from Honfleur, south bound for France’s wine capital, Bordeaux.
Guests are invited to soak up the atmosphere on the final day of the Rouen Armada, as one of the world’s largest gatherings of tall ships parades down the River Seine. A bus will take you from the festivities to Honfleur to board the Santa Maria Manuela as we prepare to sail west and south, along France’s rugged coastline in the company of some of the 50 sailing ships which will have converged on Rouen.
With a favorable wind, and all hands on deck, our crew will invite you to help hoist the sails and trim for best speed. The feeling of helming a 67m sailing ship as she responds to the command of the wheel is something to savor forever.
Knot classes are a great way to learn a new skill whilst sharing sailing stories with shipmates, and if the weather allows there's the opportunity to go up the mast or relax in the bowsprit netting. A drink at sunset on the deck is the perfect way to round off each day.
Soon we sail up the river Garonne to dock on one of Bordeaux’s UNESCO classified quays. When you think of Bordeaux, it’s wine that comes to mind. And no wonder, with 60 appellations and 7000 winemakers, the city is the capital of a region which is home to some of the oldest vineyards and finest wines in the world. But Bordeaux has so much more to offer, unveiled perfectly during our final 24 hours as enjoy our deck BBQ whilst cruising up the River Garonne passing a landscape rich in culture, nature, vineyards and enchanting chateaux.
A final climax to the voyage and an honor as the Tall Ship arrives on the dockside as the focal point of the Bordeaux Festival opening ceremony and light show at 23h00.
The next day we disembark, with the opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of the festival and explore the historic city of Bordeaux.

I am a passionate sailor, and whenever possible spend my weekends in or around the water with my family. In 2017, after 13 years, I stopped working at the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and moved to Portugal to work on the Santa Maria Manuela project to run sailing holidays.

Boat details

Four masted schooner Santa Maria Manuela offers adventure voyages, island hopping, ocean voyages, diving and oceanographic expeditions for individuals of all ages and groups. At 223ft long (63 metres) she is the largest tall ship Classic Sailing offers activity holidays on, but the crew to guest ratio is excellent so you will be well looked after. This historic Portuguese tall ship has excellent facilities on board and plenty of holiday toys like dive ribs, 'stand up paddle boards' and kayaks, but this is also a ship where you can take part in the hands on sailing, join a night watch or climb the rigging.

Santa Maria Manuela was once the flagship of the Portuguese cod fishing fleet. Built in 1937, in the same year as her sister ship Creoula, she was designed to fish the Newfoundland Banks and rich fishing waters of Arctic Greenland. She often carries the small rowing and sailing dories that would have set out from the mother ship to fish for cod, so you can continue her fishing tradition from small boats or from her huge wooden decks.

Terrific crew & ship and a lovely passage to the Azores. Crew & Guests very good and patient with someone who only spoke English. It would be difficult to find a better one.
This is a terrifically well run vessel, or was on this trip. Excellent accommodation, well serviced by a professional crew. All very friendly, helpful and willing to give information throughout. Many opportunities to get involved in most aspects of the ships operation & involvement in the vessel's past history.
The Island was beautiful and rather unexpected.
Best wishes & Good Luck for the future.
Very many thanks
