Fourth and last stage of the Iacobus Maris Route, in which we will depart from the Portuguese town of Porto to reach our destination in Vigo, all aboard a wooden schooner built in the 1980s.

The Iacobus Maris Route is an event that aims to pay homage to the Jacobean tradition, with a maritime pilgrimage from east to west that emulates the path followed by the body of the Apostle Santiago. Classically inspired boats will participate in it throughout four different stages.

In this stage we will make a 7-day journey from Porto to Vigo in which we will sail 205 nautical miles. During this week you will be able to experience what it is to sail aboard a schooner of these dimensions. You will also enjoy the activities organized around the Iacobus Maris Route with the closing of the event in the city of Vigo.

  • Plan
Boarding in Porto on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
    Navigation to Finisterre.
Disembark in Vigo on Friday afternoon.

On Saturday around 08:30 a.m. a bus will pick you up very close to the boat to get to Vilanova de Arousa, where you will get on a boat to do the Ulla ski lift, which lasts approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes (on board you will be served a small breakfast). Disembark in Pontecesures (where there will be a short reception by the mayor) and from there transfer by bus to Milladoiro. From that place to Santiago there are about 5 kilometers of road. In Santiago, food will be free there and at 5:00 p.m. a reception is scheduled by the Xunta authorities at the Hostal de los Reyes Católicos (Parador). At the end of said reception, and because the pilgrim's mass cannot be until Sunday at 09:30 a.m., there are 2 options:

1- Stay in Santiago, sleep in a hostel and participate in the pilgrim's mass with an exhibition of the Botafumeiro.
2- Return to Vigo by bus, participate in the festival in Vigo and the next day a bus will pick you up at 08:00 to attend the pilgrim's mass.

After the end of the mass, return by bus to Vigo and there will be an act of delivery of the nautical Compostelas at the port. In the afternoon the Iacobus Route ends.

Boat details

It is a ship with a unique beauty, built entirely in noble wood. By combining a traditional look with modern facilities, the boat creates a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Built by hand in Spain between 1980 and 1984, it is one of the few large, hand-made, wooden-hulled sailboats around the world that still sail.

Scarlet red, and built following an original design inspired by the schooners of the nineteenth century, it seems taken from a pirate movie.

The first time I joined them, was November 2017 as a volunteer for winter maintenance. I joined because I really wanted to support the project of keeping alive classic ships.
Since the first moment I noticed this ship is one in her kind. She was handbuilt as part of a very personal project, and that gives the ship some kind of own personality that really makes her special. And it is that personality what, in my opinion, gather around such amazing people as I found there.
I have seen how this ship changed many lives and helped many people to find out a lot about themselves. In my particular case, when I finished my first period onboard as a volunteer I felt that I had been watching the world throught a small porthole before, and that the weeks I spent onboard opened a lot of windows in my lives giving a panoramic view about how big the world was. And the most incredible part was, that all that happened being moored by the river.
I had the pleasure of joining them for a month as a crew member after that. It was aswell an incredible experience, and it is the perfect evidence of how this ship always find the way to keep her crew around.
