Christmas holiday & training cruise on Madeira

This cruise combines skipper training and a vacation around Madeira. The starting and finishing port is Quinta do Lorde, from where we set course for Porto Santo – the small neighboring island with its long sandy beaches. Aboard our Jeanneau, we'll sail approximately 150 nautical miles, ideal for those seeking both relaxation and practical sailing experience.

Plan

The focus is on practical skipper training: harbor maneuvers, anchoring, sail trimming, navigation, and safety at sea. Topics such as meteorology, cruise planning, and crew leadership are also covered. At the same time, there is time to enjoy the diverse landscapes of Madeira and Porto Santo. The cruise is aimed at sailors who want to expand their knowledge or specifically prepare for their own charter projects or the SKS.

In December, Madeira enjoys mild temperatures. The northeast trade winds provide reliable winds, while Atlantic swells and currents make sailing varied. A tranquil atmosphere and the famous Christmas-decorated promenades await us in the harbors. An absolute highlight is the "Noite do Mercado" on December 23rd in Funchal, where the entire capital gathers for Christmas celebrations.

Our yacht, the Sun Odyssey 389, is a modern cruising yacht with three cabins plus a saloon and a bathroom. The saloon is not used. Equipped with an autopilot, solar panels, heating, a bow thruster, and new sails (2024), she offers a perfect blend of safety, sailing performance, and comfort.

Other information

The skipper for this activity speaks english and german. To participate you must speak one of the languages spoken on board.

The costs for arrival and departure, as well as the onboard cash contribution, are not included in the price. Vacationers are always welcome on our training trips. We'd be happy to provide you with further information about the respective trips!

Boat details

The Sun Odyssey 389 is a modern sailing yacht from Jeanneau with a length of 11.75 m and a beam of 3.76 m. It combines good sailing characteristics with sophisticated comfort below deck and is suitable for both sporty cruising and holiday trips.

The layout includes three double cabins and a bathroom with shower and toilet. The saloon is bright and open, with a U-shaped seating area, navigation table, and a functional galley with a cooler, gas stove, and sink.

The cockpit is spacious and, with two steering wheels, offers unobstructed access to the folding bathing platform at the stern. The rig is easy to operate—with a fully battened mainsail and furling genoa—and is easy to handle for small crews.

A great sailing and water sports school. I obtained my SBF-See, SBF-Binnen/Segel and UBI/SRC here. Friendly, patient trainers who use their experience and skills to get you to the required exam level. Despite the training, there is still plenty of fun and they take the time to respond to special requests/concerns. I would love to come back here to broaden my maritime horizons.

The theory compact course (in my case SBF Inland) is really very good and prepares you ideally for the exam and beyond.
I also really liked the friendly trainers during the practical training sessions. This meant I was able to pass both exams straight away.

Very good preparation for the exam and future sailing experiences. You can see that all the trainers are very passionate about what they do.
There are always reports of experiences and additional theoretical background on all exam-relevant topics, so that you feel very well prepared the first time you are alone on the boat.

I just did my SBF inland sailing/motor here.
Great people, pleasant atmosphere. The teachers are easy-going, but still competent and can show you what is important when sailing.
If you don't feel completely confident with certain maneuvers, just ask. There is no rigid curriculum that has to be followed. You can decide for yourself where you need more practice.
As you gain experience, you will spend some time on board with just other students. This helps you to feel responsible for the boat and the maneuvers and to coordinate with the other students. But don't worry, a boat with a teacher is always nearby if something goes wrong or you have any questions.
