Why should we take care of the seas and oceans?

The oceans and their seas are the main producers of oxygen. Thanks to phytoplankton, more than 50% of the oxygen consumed annually is generated in the seas and oceans. They act as an important buffer for carbon dioxide generated by humans and high levels of consumption. They also help regulate the planet's temperature, absorbing much of the excess heat generated by climate change.

The oceans are home to a great diversity of species of all kinds, becoming one of the main reserves of biodiversity in the world. They constitute more than 90% of the habitable space of the planet and contain some 250,000 known species and many more that are estimated to be discovered. This is because more than two-thirds of the world's marine species have yet to be identified.

It is the main source of food for millions of people, especially in less developed countries.

Finally, the oceans contribute 1.5 trillion dollars to the GDP of the world economy, and are also the main means of transporting goods.

What problems do the seas and oceans suffer from?

Marine pollution: The most worrying and visible is plastic pollution. There are currently more than 5 islands of oceanic garbage, the largest being 80,000 tons and the size of France.

The most worrying thing is that these plastics are ingested by fish, turtles, birds and other species, deadly harmful and putting many species in danger of extinction. In addition, we must add the contamination of liquid waste and polluting waste from large factories, which so harmfully affect the ecosystem.

Increase in temperature: The sea level will generate destruction of ecosystems and species at an incalculable level. It also threatens a large percentage of the world's population, due to the large number of people who live on the coasts of the entire planet.

Acidification of the sea: As a consequence of the increase in temperature due to climate change, the oceans are absorbing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, causing the oxygen level to drop and endangering all marine species that exist.

Tips for ocean friendly navigation

Do not throw any waste overboard: The best action you can take to sail with your family or friends in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way is to responsibly manage all the waste generated on board, to carry out its subsequent recycling on land. Reducing the consumption of plastics and promoting the consumption of other less polluting substitute products is a small habit with a great impact.

Navigate in a calm way: Betting on the use of sails, whenever possible and the boat and the weather allow it, to avoid high fuel consumption. We will also protect the corals and reefs of the most coastal areas.

Eco-friendly products: The preference in the use of cleaning products for the boat and protectors or sun oils that are respectful of the marine environment, guarantee the correct balance of the same. It is recommended in the case of sun cream, that it is not composed of oxybenzone, since this chemical puts coral reefs and fish at risk.
