In this workshop we will work in a practical way on the main contents related to the interpretation and use of nautical charts. The objective is for participants to gain confidence, confidence and real understanding of this essential tool for navigating.
Throughout the day, the following aspects will be addressed:
Introduction to the nautical chart: what it is, what it is for and why it is essential for navigation. Its structure, types of charts, scales and most commonly used cartographic projections will be explained.
Basic reading and interpretation: how to orient yourself on the chart, understand the geographical coordinate system (latitude and longitude), locate points and recognize the key elements of the chart.
Symbology and abbreviations: interpretation of the official symbols included in the INT 1 publication, reading of the seabed, types of backgrounds, signs, navigation aids and other important marks.
Positioning on a chart: location of coordinates, tracing of own positions and those of other ships. Practice with compass, ruler and protractor.
Calculation of directions and distances: how to measure real distances on the chart using the appropriate scale. Use of the protractor to determine true and needle directions, applying the necessary corrections (magnetic declination and needle deflection).
Tracing defeats: planning routes on paper, identifying obstacles or areas of danger in the defeat and studying safe alternatives.
Practical exercises: application of the knowledge acquired in real simulated situations, with basic navigation problems that integrate positioning, calculation of directions, use of symbols and decision-making.
Resolution of frequent doubts: clarification of concepts that tend to cause confusion both in the study of the PER and in practice at sea.
