Set sail across the Azorean archipelago on a journey from Terceira to sun-kissed Santa Maria, the southernmost island in the chain. Along the way, keep watch for dolphins, whales, and other marine life that often accompany our passage through these rich Atlantic waters.
August is prime season for diving around Santa Maria, with warm seas, excellent visibility, and the possibility of spotting pelagic species such as blue sharks, rays, and even the elusive whale shark. The island served as a filming location for The Island of the Giants, a documentary by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Nuno Sá—an occasional guest aboard the tall ship during marine research voyages. His collaborator, Azorean editor and photographer Pepe Brix, helped shape the film, capturing the unique marine ecosystems of the region.
We’ll spend a few days in Santa Maria, giving you time to explore both above and below the waterline. Local guides offer everything from guided hikes across volcanic trails to unforgettable dives in crystal-clear waters.
Aboard the ship, guests are encouraged to dive into the sailing experience. Try your hand at setting the sails, steering at the helm, or participating in knot-tying workshops. For those seeking a little more adventure (weather permitting), there’s the chance to climb the rigging or unwind on the bowsprit.
Evenings often wind down with a drink on deck as the sky glows with the last light of day—an ideal way to reflect and connect.
Our voyage concludes in Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel, the largest of the Azorean islands. Before departing, take time to explore local landmarks like the churches of São Pedro and São Sebastião, or visit the hilltop Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança. To the west, don’t miss the dramatic crater lakes of Sete Cidades—an iconic end to a journey through these remote Atlantic isles.
