RYA Coastal Skipper course in Baiona

The RYA Coastal Skipper course is suitable for more experienced skippers who have RYA Day Skipper or equivalent and a minimum level of experience.

At this stage of her development, we really focus on the skills needed to captain a yacht on longer, more complex voyages. Instructors will work with you on your decision making, passage planning, navigation techniques and piloting skills. Emphasis will also be placed on improving marina skills and severe weather preparation.

Course completely on board, with all meals included. One of the RYA instructors will work with you through the full curriculum, covering everything you need to know to be a competent and useful skipper on any future yachts you sail.

A training vacation

Every day, you will sail to a new place, visiting the wonderful ports and anchorages of the Rías Baixas. You'll finish each day both on dry land and in beautiful anchorages, and there's usually the chance to head ashore for a well-earned beer and a chat about the day's training.

In the best place to learn to navigate. The Rias are one of the best sailing spots in the world, with their wide variety of locations, protected waters, gentle tides and variety of scenery.

Plan

The objective of this course is to teach the skills and techniques necessary to safely captain a cruising yacht in coastal passages by day and night.

Step planning
You can plan a coastal passage including consideration of yacht capacity, navigation, provisions, weather, ports of refuge, tidal heights and tidal currents, required publications and strategy.
Learn about customs procedures

Preparing for the sea
Learn about the safety equipment required for offshore passages.
You can prepare a yacht for sea, including storage, safety briefings, watchkeeping, delegation of responsibilities, and equipment and engine checks.

Pilotage
You can prepare a pilotage plan, taking into account the environment, transits, clearing courses, beacons, port or harbour regulations and tidal considerations.
He knows how to pilot a yacht day and night.

Passage making and pattern skills.
You can take charge of a yacht and lead the crew. You can organize navigation, deck work and housekeeping of a yacht during the voyage. You are aware of the importance of weather trends. You are aware of the well-being of the crew during the voyage.
You may use electronic navigation equipment to plan and conduct a course, including the use of waypoints and routes.

Handling of motor yachts
It can control the yacht effectively in a confined space under power.
All docking and undocking situations in various wind and tide conditions.

Sailing yacht handling
Features You can use the sails to control the yacht in a confined space Anchoring and mooring in various wind and tide conditions.
You can navigate efficiently at all navigation points.

Adverse weather conditions
Preparation for adverse weather conditions and handling yachts in strong winds.
Navigation and general conduct in restricted visibility.

Emergency situations
Recovery from an accident overboard by motor and sail
Understand the steps to take when leaving the life raft and during helicopter and lifeboat rescues.

Hours: Monday at 9:00 a.m. - Friday at 5:00 p.m.
Duration: 5 days (Monday to Friday)
Minimum of 2 students registered to take the course.

Other information

All crew members are welcome, even if they do not know the language spoken on board (english and spanish)

90% of students join alone, so these are great courses if you come alone. It's a small, fun group of like-minded people all working towards the same goal.

You can expect a maximum of 5 students on board.

If you wish to have a private cabin the price increases by 25%.
