RYA Coastal Skipper course in Baiona

The RYA Coastal Skipper course is suitable for more experienced skippers who have RYA Day Skipper or equivalent and a minimum level of experience.

At this stage of her development, we really focus on the skills needed to captain a yacht on longer, more complex voyages. Instructors will work with you on your decision making, passage planning, navigation techniques and piloting skills. Emphasis will also be placed on improving marina skills and severe weather preparation.

Course completely on board, with all meals included. One of the RYA instructors will work with you through the full curriculum, covering everything you need to know to be a competent and useful skipper on any future yachts you sail.

A training vacation

Every day, you will sail to a new place, visiting the wonderful ports and anchorages of the Rías Baixas. You'll finish each day both on dry land and in beautiful anchorages, and there's usually the chance to head ashore for a well-earned beer and a chat about the day's training.

In the best place to learn to navigate. The Rias are one of the best sailing spots in the world, with their wide variety of locations, protected waters, gentle tides and variety of scenery.

Plan

The objective of this course is to teach the skills and techniques necessary to skipper a cruising yacht safely in coastal passages day and night.

Step planning
You can plan a coastal passage including a consideration of yacht capacity, navigation, victualling, weather, ports of refuge, tide heights and tidal currents, required publications and strategy.
Know customs procedures

Preparation for the sea
Know the safety equipment required for offshore passages.
Can prepare a yacht for sea, including storage, safety briefings, surveillance, delegation of responsibilities, and equipment and engine checks.

Pilotage
You can prepare a pilotage plan, taking into account the environment, transits, clearing courses, beacons, port or harbor regulations, and tidal considerations.

Making passages and skill as a pattern.
You can take charge of a yacht and direct the crew. You can organize the navigation, deck work and housework of a yacht during the voyage. You are aware of the importance of weather trends. Is aware of the crew's well-being during the voyage.

Under-engine yacht handling
