Competent Crew is the introductory yacht sailing course from the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). It is suitable both for complete beginners and those with some dinghy sailing experience who would like to move on to sail yachts.

Competent Crew is very practical and hands-on. The theory is kept to a minimum. You will live on the yacht for the duration of the course, and be out sailing every day. You will receive expert tuition in all the essential crewing skills such as steering, hoisting and trimming sails, essential sailing knots and life onboard.
It is fun, supportive and light-hearted. It is the perfect introduction to yacht sailing.

No previous experience required

A fun, safe introductory yacht sailing course that earns you the all important first RYA qualification: Competent Crew

You spend the full course living on the yacht, with all meals provided. One of the expert Julio Verne Nautica instructors will work through the full syllabus with you, covering everything you need to know to be a competent and useful crew member on any future yachts you sail on.

A training holiday

Each day, you will sail to somewhere new, visiting the wonderful harbors and anchorages of the Rias Baixas. You will finish each day both on the mainland and on beautiful anchorages, and there's usually the chance to head into one of the local pubs for a well-earned beer and chat about the day's training.

In one of the best places to learn to sail

The Rias are easily one of the best sailing grounds in the world, with its huge variety of locations, sheltered water, smooth tides, and lots of fishing ships moving by. As we describe in our Rias Baixas overview, this really is the only place to learn to sail.

The internship was very enjoyable, entertaining and very educational. A great trainer. He also provided us with a lot of additional documentation so that we could continue learning. Not to mention that the ship is a 5-star hotel and IVAN is a great chef. Thank you very much for everything.

Magnificent seafaring experience. We had a lot of wind which allowed us to carry out maneuvers in adverse conditions. Daniel, the instructor, a super professional with experience that takes the hiccups.
