The Day Skipper Course focuses on developing your boat handling, navigation, skippering and general seamanship skills.

  • Plan
The course is live-a-board for the 5 day duration and plan is to sail out into the stunning Bay of Islands and enjoy one of the best cruising area's in the world while learning the ropes. You will spend the first day running through boat handling around the marina and inner sheltered waters before sailing out into the Bay. Along the way you'll work on sail trim and handling the boat through tacks and gybes. By late afternoon we'll pull into an amazing bay for the night. Over the ensuing 4 days we will cover preparation for sea, navigation, meteorology, maintenance and repair work, provisioning, yacht handling under power and sail, passage making, deck work, pilotage, rules of the road, engines emergency situations and man overboard recovery.

We aim to cover at least 100 miles during the course which includes one night sail of 4-5 hours during this time.

As we have 4 separate berth areas you may have your own cabin but it could be you may have to share a 2 berth cabin depending on student numbers

Certificates are awarded on the successful completion of each course and applicable to the level of competency achieved for your particular course. You can gain the RYA/MCA commercial qualifications further down the track once you complete your Coastal Skipper, Offshore and Ocean Yachtmaster Examinations, which leads on from the practical courses we offer.
