Skipper training in Croatia – practical sailing training

The perfect training for aspiring skippers

If you want to take the helm yourself and improve your sailing skills, our skipper training is perfect for you. Our professional instructors will teach you all the necessary knowledge to safely and independently steer a sailboat.

Contents of the skipper training

Theoretical basics: Learn the basics of navigation, meteorology and safety when sailing.

Practical training: Put what you have learned into practice by steering the boat, setting sails and performing harbor maneuvers.

Certificate: After completing the course, you have the opportunity to test your knowledge in an exam and obtain an official certificate.
Some sailing experience is required for these training sessions.
A sailing license is not absolutely necessary.

  • Plan
During our skipper training courses in Croatia, we practice, among other things:

✔ Harbor maneuvers, also with mooring
✔ Correct anchoring and mooring to buoys
    ✔ Important knots to master
    ✔ Psychology and crew leadership
✔ POB (Person over Board) – correct behavior
✔ Severe weather situations – what to do?
✔ Trip planning, weather reports and much more

Most of these trips have a minimum occupancy of 4 guests. The yacht (usually a 4-cabin yacht) is generally occupied by a maximum of 6 guests.

This gives all participants ample opportunity to actively improve their sailing skills.

Important: These practical training weeks are not swimming trips – even though there are occasional opportunities to swim.

What can you expect from our training sessions?
Our 7-day skipper training courses are specifically designed to provide you with the comprehensive practical knowledge you need as a skipper. The training includes both theoretical and practical elements, tailored to the needs and wishes of all participants.

    Training content:
Sailing theory: Basic and advanced sailing skills. We cover topics such as navigation, meteorology, ship technology, harbor maneuvers, safety, crew management, etc.

Practical sailing skills: Under the instruction of our experienced skippers, you will learn to steer the boat, perform maneuvers, set sails, and apply the basic techniques of sailing. Plenty of harbor maneuvers – training in the harbor – are also planned!

Safety on board: Safety is our top priority. We will train you in the necessary safety precautions and the correct handling of the equipment.

Mile-building trips - covering approximately 300 nautical miles per week - on monohulls and catamarans.
Our sailing trips are not only educational, but also an adventure! You have the option of sailing on either a monohull or a catamaran, depending on your personal preference.

    Monohull sailing yachts
Monohulls offer a classic sailing experience and are ideal for experiencing the traditional way of sailing. Our monohulls are modern, well-equipped, and give you the feeling of truly being at sea.

    Catamarans
Catamarans are generally more stable in the water, roll less, and offer more space and comfort. They are perfect for families or groups who want to enjoy sailing and relax at the same time. With their wide decks and spacious cabins, they are the ideal place for relaxing days on the water.

The schedule of your 7-day sailing training
Day 1: Arrival in Pula or Sukosan
Upon your arrival in Pula or Sukosan, depending on your chosen region, we will warmly welcome you and show you the yacht that will accompany you during your training. Here you will receive an initial briefing and can get to know the crew and your fellow sailors.

    Day 2: Sailing basics
On the second day of training, we begin with a theoretical introduction to the basics of sailing. Topics such as sail types, navigation, and meteorology are on the agenda. In the afternoon, we head out onto the water! Under the supervision of our team, we hoist the sails and perform our first maneuvers.

Day 3: Practical exercises and safety management
This day is dedicated entirely to practical exercises. These include the handling of safety equipment, emergency management, and basic maneuvers. During this phase, you can practice steering the boat under various conditions.

Day 4: Sailing trip to the best bays
We're setting sail for one of the most beautiful destinations in the region, whether in Istria or Dalmatia. Enjoy the stunning bays, the sparkling water, and the opportunity to snorkel or swim.

    Day 5: Advanced sailing techniques
Tacking, gybing, mooring – on the fifth day we focus on advanced maneuvers and techniques. Here you will learn how to moor under sail in various harbors and bays, while our skippers share valuable tips and tricks.

Day 6: Mileage trip and weather strategies
We'll undertake an extended sailing trip where you can put your newly acquired knowledge into practice. Our team will cover weather strategies and navigation through varying water depths and sailing conditions.

    Day 7: Return and farewell
On the last day, we return to our home port. Here, we reflect on the skills we've learned and share our best moments. We celebrate your progress and new sailing abilities with a farewell dinner.
Because these training sessions are of course very dependent on the weather and we also adapt these tours significantly to the wishes of the crew, it is quite possible that the tour - in which you are participating - will be completely different than described here.

Your sailing crew: Experienced skippers who will be at your side.
Our skippers are not only experienced sailors, but also natural teachers. With extensive experience in the region and in sailing, they will guide you through your trip, answer your questions, and ensure that you feel comfortable both during training and on the sailing trip itself.

German-speaking: The onboard language is German, so you can easily communicate in your native language.

Reliable and professional: Our skippers are very well trained and bring a wealth of sailing experience.

Passion for sailing: They share their enthusiasm for sailing and nature with you.

Safety on board: Your safety is ensured.
The safety of our guests is our highest priority. Therefore, all yachts are equipped with state-of-the-art safety equipment. Before each trip, our skippers conduct safety briefings explaining all necessary safety measures and onboard procedures.

    Safety equipment includes:
Life jackets: Life jackets are available for all crew members.

Navigation and communication: Safety equipment including radio and emergency call signal.

First aid equipment: First aid kits and emergency equipment on board.

    Preparation for your sailing training
    Logistics and arrival
Getting to Pula or Sukosan: Both locations are easily accessible by plane or car. The nearest airport is Pula or Zadar, depending on your training's departure point. If you're arriving by car, we can reserve parking spaces for you.

Accommodation: There are numerous options for staying near the marina or in nearby hotels before the trip begins, should you wish to arrive a few days earlier.

    What should you bring?
To be as prepared as possible for your trip, remember the following things:

Sailing clothing: Lightweight, breathable clothing that dries quickly. Clothing for cold, windy, and rainy weather should also be packed in the duffel bag.

Swimwear and towels: For when you're at the beach or snorkeling.

Personal items: Beach shoes, sun hat and sunscreen are important to protect yourself from the sun.

Snorkeling equipment: If you enjoy snorkeling, bring your own equipment – there are numerous opportunities to explore the underwater world.

Information about our sailing practice training courses

Our sailing practice training often takes place on yachts such as the Bavaria 46 BT, Elan 444 Impression or similar models.
Occasionally, yachts such as the Bavaria 49 BT or the Cyclades 43.4 are also used.

Important: The saloon is never booked as a fixed sleeping place on our trips – it always remains free and is available to everyone on board.

To cover provisions on board and other yacht expenses incurred during the trip, a crew fund (also called "onboard fund") is set up by the guests at the beginning of the voyage. This fund is managed by a crew member.

Typical yacht-related expenses include, for example:
– Diesel consumption (e.g. when there is no wind for sailing)
– Mooring fees (approx. 2 nights in marinas during the trip)
– Meals on board (breakfast, lunch snack, dinner – especially during nights in anchorages)

On average, these costs amount to approximately 150 to 200 euros per person per week.
Restaurant visits are at each individual's own expense and must be paid for separately.

The skipper is – as usual – provided with meals by the crew on board and in the restaurant. He is exempt from contributing to the crew kitty.

Note: All amounts are non-binding guidelines and may vary significantly depending on the trip.

I've been fortunate enough to be able to turn one of my hobbies into a career. That's why I've been working full-time in the yacht charter, crewed sailing, and sailing training sectors for over 30 years. During this time, I've been able to serve thousands of guests. I'm grateful for what has been, for the most part, a wonderful time.

Booking was easy and my questions were answered promptly. The sailing trip from March 21st to 28th, departing from Sukosan, was perfectly organized by skipper Franzl. We learned a lot about seamanship, and the social aspect on board was also well-maintained. I'm looking forward to the next trip – I highly recommend it!
