Preguntas frecuentes para looking for a boat adventure from Europe to the Caribbean?

  • Can I go alone even if I don't know anyone?

Yes, and it's the most common way. You book a single berth and share the boat with other crew members who are also traveling independently. Spending weeks together at sea creates a strong bond.
  • Can I speak to the employer before paying?

Of course. From each profile, you can message them directly, view their profile, and read what other crew members have to say. We recommend doing this, as it's the best way to see if you're a good fit.
  • What does the price of the place include?

It depends on each trip, and you'll find the details in its information sheet, showing what's included and what's not. Pay particular attention to the onboard meals, port fees, and the return flight, which is usually at your own expense.
  • How do I get back to Europe when I arrive in the Caribbean?

The most common option is to fly from your arrival island. Martinique and Guadeloupe have direct flights to Paris, from where you can connect to Spain. If you're still looking for more, in spring you can return by sailing with our crossings from the Americas to Europe .
  • What documentation do I need?

Bring your valid passport. If you're departing from Cape Verde, have a layover there, or arrive on an island outside the European Union such as Barbados, Antigua, or Saint Lucia, check the entry requirements on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website beforehand. Your skipper will also be able to advise you.
  • What is the price for this type of trip?

The great thing about Sailwiz is that you don't need to book the whole boat or find a crew. You can book just your berth. For each activity, you should check the departure point, as this determines the number of sailing days. We offer crossings ranging from €1,400 to €5,000. Carefully compare what each activity includes and speak to the skipper to resolve any questions you may have.
  • Why take your trip to America by boat with Sailwiz?

When you're going to spend weeks in the middle of the ocean with people you don't know, the price isn't the most important factor. It's knowing who you're sailing with. That's why at Sailwiz, every voyage has a skipper with a name and public profile; you can read reviews from other crew members and talk to them before booking.

Booking your spot on Sailwiz is not the same as finding a boat on your own. Here, you know who the skipper is and can read reviews from other crew members, whereas independently you only have access to what they tell you. You can contact them directly from the listing before deciding, see the price per person and what's included, and review the cancellation policy before paying.
  • Where can you join us to go to the Caribbean by boat?

The departure port changes everything. It determines how many weeks you need, how much open ocean you'll sail, and how much the trip costs. If you're short on time, Cape Verde drops you right off the beaten path. If you want to experience the whole thing, departing from the Iberian Peninsula gives you the complete journey from end to end.

Departing from the Peninsula or France
You have 6 crossings departing from Valencia, Cádiz, Lisbon, and Lorient. These trips range from 18 to 43 days, starting at €2,961 for the full route, and cover approximately 2,700 nautical miles of open ocean plus the preceding leg to the Canary Islands. They're perfect if you want to plan the entire trip from home and have 5 to 6 weeks to spare.

    Departing from the Canary Islands
Eight crossings depart from Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Tenerife. They last from 25 to 40 days, start at €3,490, and cover approximately 2,700 nautical miles following the classic trade wind route. They're a good option if you have a free month.

    Departing from Cape Verde
From Sal and Mindelo, there are 5 crossings of 16 to 21 days, starting from €2,961, that go directly to the great leap of about 2,100 miles. Perfect if you have 2 or 3 weeks.
  • Which travel format suits you best?

Not all voyages are the same. Some are for enjoying yourself and disconnecting, others for learning to sail seriously, and others for competing with hundreds of boats around you.
    • Classic crossing: One boat, one skipper, and a small group crossing together. There are 7 options starting from €2,970, and it's the best choice if it's your first time and you want to experience the adventure without complications.
    • Flotilla: Several boats sail together and support each other during the crossing. There are 4 options starting from €2,961, giving you peace of mind knowing other boats are nearby.
    • By sections: You only board the stage that suits you. There are 3 sections, plus 2 fleets that can also be booked by sections, from €1,476 per section. Ideal if you only have one or two weeks.
    • Ocean School: Learn ocean navigation on board while accumulating nautical miles. There are 3 courses starting from €3,899, designed for those who want to return home knowing how to sail.
    • Regatta or rally: Cross-country races within an event with a mass start. There are 2 options starting from €5,400, for those who enjoy the competitive atmosphere and organized logistics.
    • The ARC regatta: is the oldest organized transatlantic crossing. It has been organized by the World Cruising Club since 1986 and departs annually from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria bound for Saint Lucia.
  • Catamaran or monohull for the crossing?

Six of the 19 crossings are on catamarans. If you're worried about seasickness or want more space, it's a great option. If you're looking to feel the boat heeling and truly sail, the monohull is for you.

A catamaran barely heels and the rolling is less noticeable; there's more space and separate cabins in each hull, and the sailing is more comfortable than sporty. If you get seasick, it's your best option.

In a monohull, the boat heels and moves more with the waves, the space is more compact, and the feeling is pure sailing. The first few days are a bit tougher if you're prone to seasickness, but many sailors wouldn't trade it for anything.

The six catamaran trips depart from Lanzarote, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Cape Verde. For all other trips, please confirm the type of boat on each listing or speak to the skipper directly if you have any questions.
  • Where do you arrive in the Caribbean?

Martinique is the main arrival destination, but not the only one. If you want to spend a few days on the islands after crossing, pay close attention to this point.

Seven crossings end in Martinique, departing from Lanzarote, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Cádiz, and Cape Verde. Three reach St. Maarten or Saint Martin from Valencia and Cape Verde, and another three reach Guadeloupe from Lisbon, Lanzarote, and Cape Verde. Two end in Saint Lucia, departing from Gran Canaria and Lorient.

And there's a crossing for each of these destinations: Barbados from Gran Canaria, Antigua from Valencia, Tortola in the British Virgin Islands from Cape Verde, and Grenada also from Cape Verde.
  • If you only have a week or two, hop on a stage

We understand that some people don't have a whole month to complete the entire crossing. That's why Sailwiz offers the option to book only some of the legs included in the trip. Currently, five of our crossings allow you to book just a portion of the route. It's the easiest way to experience ocean sailing without taking a month off work.
