Our adventure begins in Málaga, where we set sail after boarding and a thorough safety briefing. After provisioning and making final preparations, there's the option of taking a ferry to Tangier to soak up the vibrant atmosphere. We then set sail through the famous Strait of Gibraltar, where we can expect busy shipping traffic and strong currents. Once we've left the traffic separation scheme, we head out into the open Atlantic. We spend the next few days at sea, taking advantage of the steady northeast trade winds and experiencing shipboard routines, navigation, and night watches. After approximately 650 nautical miles, we reach Lanzarote, the easternmost of the Canary Islands. Here, we can enjoy a swimming stop, explore the volcanic landscape, or relax on the beaches. We continue on to Fuerteventura, where we have time for shore excursions, swimming, and other activities. Our final leg takes us to Gran Canaria – with the possibility of another swim stop in a secluded bay along the way, before we arrive in Las Palmas and bring our voyage to a close, enjoying the Canarian joie de vivre.
For those collecting miles for their next sailing license: Since we'll be crossing the open sea on this trip, you'll log plenty of nautical miles. Of course, we'll issue you an official mileage certificate at the end of the trip.
Late autumn is the best time to sail this Atlantic crossing. The route offers an exciting mix of coastal sailing, bluewater sailing, and island hopping. We'll sail along the Moroccan coast, with a possible stop in Tangier. There's a high probability of spotting dolphins and whales along the way. The combination of culture, historical sites, challenging navigation, and the vastness of the Atlantic makes this leg one of the most fascinating sailing areas anywhere.
